What This Policy Covers

This policy applies to simplereads.org and the SimpleReads browser extension (together, “SimpleReads”).

Information We Collect

1) Data you provide

SimpleReads does not require you to provide personal information (like your name or email) just to read and take notes. If you choose to enable features like document syncing, we may process the minimum information needed to make that work.

2) Notes, highlights, and page context

When you use SimpleReads, you may create notes and highlights tied to the page you’re reading. To keep your work organized and prevent “lost context,” SimpleReads may store the source page URL alongside your note/highlight metadata.

If you enable syncing (for example, exporting to a document), SimpleReads will create or update a document containing your notes. Your content remains yours.

3) Minimal usage & diagnostic data

To improve reliability and accessibility, we may collect limited usage and diagnostic information such as:

  • Feature usage (e.g., Blur + Zoom activation)
  • Basic performance/error diagnostics
  • Browser/device type (for compatibility)

We aim to keep analytics privacy-friendly and focused on improving the product, not tracking individuals.


Sharing and Disclosure of Google User Data

We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer your Google user data to third parties. We only share Google user data in the following limited circumstances:

  • Service Provision: We may share data with service providers who help us maintain the application, provided they adhere to strict privacy standards.
  • Legal Compliance: We may disclose data if required by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities.
  • Google Limited Use: Our use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the **Limited Use** requirements.

Data Retention and Deletion

We value your control over your data. Our retention and deletion policies are as follows:

  • Retention: We retain Google user data only for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you with the services of SimpleReads.
  • Deletion: Upon account deletion or a specific request, we will securely delete your Google user data from our active databases within 30 days.
  • User Control: You can request data deletion at any time by contacting our support team or using the account management tools provided within the extension.

Cookies & Local Storage

SimpleReads may use cookies or browser storage for essential functionality (like preferences). We do not use third-party advertising cookies.

What We Don’t Do

  • We do not sell personal information.
  • We do not use your notes/highlights to build advertising profiles.
  • We do not run behavior-based ads inside the extension.

Students & Children

SimpleReads may be used in educational settings. We strive to minimize data collection and store only what’s necessary. If SimpleReads is deployed through a school, additional student privacy requirements may apply depending on the district’s setup.
